(14 Dec 1994) English/Nat Marxist dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam presided over the bloodiest period in the recent history of an Ethiopia. Now he is to be tried in absentia for atrocities committed during his regime. The Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, is a city that has only recently returned to a state of relative normality after years of bitter civil conflict and famine. Conservative estimates say 150,000 Ethiopians were killed in "The Red Terror" that followed Mengistu's seizure of power in 1974. That doesn't include the estimated 100,000 who died in forced relocation programs or 1 (m) million who died in ensuing famines. The 46 men now being put on trial, including former Prime Minister Fikre Selassie, are charged with genocide and crimes against humanity. Mengistu Haile Mariam, who lives in luxury in exile in Zimbabwe, will not face the court. Mengistu launched his bloody campaign in 1977 by smashing a bottle of red ink on a city square to symbolize the blood of his enemies. Within days thousands of bodies were found and parents were forced to pay the authorities for the bullets that killed their children. In 1983 Mengistu unveiled a dramatic monument entitled "Our Struggle" which depicts him as a revolutionary and political hero adored by his followers. The defendants in the trial face severe penalties if found guilty.
